Research Programme

IDEoPOP aims to establish the study of the international dimensions and effects of populism as a research programme. It is driven by the following overarching research question: How are domestic and international politics related in populism, and how does populism impact international politics? As the phenomenon of populism is likely to continue affecting citizens’ lives, state institutions, regional integration efforts, and the liberal international order in the years to come, a better understanding of its international implications is of utmost importance.

Research in IDEoPOP is organized in four Work Packages:

Work Package 1: Populist Conceptions of World Order and the International: How Populists See the World

Work Package 2: Populism in International and Regional Organizations: Reshaping international cooperation

Work Package 3: Leaders, Parties, and Bureaucracies: How Populism Impacts Foreign Policies and Diplomatic Practice

Work Package 4: Populist Communication about World Politics: Using the International for Domestic Mobilization
